Royal Mail to hire 30,000 temps

Not sure this is actually the answer

Well if they want to rub the union members noses in it this is the way to go, but if they want to save the PO they need to get back round the table and negotiate.
Mr Stevenson

The Royal Mail is employing 30,000 staff to offset the effect of the
impending strike. That is double the normal seasonal increase of
temporary staff. Quite clearly this is confrontation and not arbitration and
can lead to nothing but trouble.

You may see trouble on the streets that can escalate into the worst street
confrontation since the miners strike.

Can you imagine a temporary postie, brought in to kill off the effects of
the strike, delivering mail that would normally be delivered by a Royal
Mail employee and considered as scab labour? Let us at this point,
remeber that he will not be part of a strong group of strike breakers who
are guarded by a massive police presence, he will be on his own and
probably delivering mail to a Royal Mail employee. A recipe for disaster in
anybodies book.
julie

Yes and they will be facing the public too so lets hope they are efficient and deliver correctly or they will be facing some cross householders too

id say as long as the temps do a good enough job of getting mail to people then it could be a good idea, this way strike or not people will still get their mail, but then if they do a bad job it could end in disaster
julie

You have never seen a real vicious strike then Frys ? Crossing a picket line at a peaceful protest can be quite intimidating but people have lost their lives in the past when scab labour has been brought in to try to end disputes.

If this ends badly the management are to blame IMO they must be made to get back round the table and negotiate !

ive heard of vicious strikes,i just dont get why they do them, surely if people are so unhappy with their wage in a job they would try and find another one

It's not just about pay though Frys, it's about job security as well.

Quote:
The CWU says that Royal Mail has carried out three of the four planned phases of that agreement with full and frank dialogue. It claims the company is refusing to talk to it about the final phase, how the roll-out of its modernisation plans would affect job security.

One aspect of this modernisation involves the walk sequencing machine, a device which organises letters into the order the postmen and women will deliver them the next morning. The CWU fears the national roll-out of this machine will mean thousands of full-time jobs will go and that there will be a massive increase in the number of part-time workers.

What really annoys me about all the cut backs that Royal Mail are making under the banner 'to save money' is that they are able to afford to pay actors and pop stars to appear in their adverts     What exactly is this money they are supposedly saving actually being spent on?

As Katy has already mentioned in another thread (nothing to do with the postal strikes I hasten to add) it's an absolute nightmare for me to go to the Post Office during my lunch hour because I have to queue for anything between 15 - 45 mins to be served because there is now only ONE Post Office open in Nottingham City Centre!!!  There are 22 counters and at any one time there are only 8 or 9 open     If they spent less money on paying big fees to celebrities to appear in adverts then perhaps they would be able to afford to have more staff serving the customers!!
julie

Most strikes are not about pay - management try to slip through changes in work practice etc and workers have to take a stand. Most of our employment law was fought and won by some very brave men and women who took a stand for everyone to benefit.

The Miners strike was the last really nasty strike I can remember sadly they lost but just look at the devastation in the old mining districts and imagine if they had won the areas could be so different.

Fry s as has been pointed out to you on more than one occasion its not all about the money!! I have replied to you in another thread or two on here and you seem to choose to ignore or not reply. i wonder why???
frys_red_jacket

ive not seen any of the other answers thats why, and i didnt know it wasnt about pay i just assumed it was cos i know last time it was

May I suggest that it is spent partly on the £10m the top bosses have just put in their back pockets. (Paid as a bonus for so called modernisation)
julie

You may suggest it and you may even be right

Frys perhapsyou should watch the news and actually find out what the strike is all about. Its not always about money
julie

The mirror explains the unions side of things quite well http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-...our-post-service-115875-21759902/ worth a read Frys it's always good to know why things are happening.
frys_red_jacket

thanks julie
have a read, i dont understand fully what it all means but at least i can see its about the money for a change
julie

I don't fully know the exact practice changes etc either Frys you will probably find it is very technical and only the unions and the management know exactly what goes on, this is why when you join a union you should be active and vote for good people to represent you because they will be the ones who call you out and have responsibility to negotiate with the management.

It's also why we should all vote whenever we get a chance in any elections too!
