Shane Richie's dad dies | Quote: | TELLY favourite Shane Richie was grief-stricken last night after his father died of cancer aged 65.
The former EastEnders star wept as Harry Roche passed away holding his hand.
Former binman Harry died on Monday night at Hammersmith hospital, West London, where he was admitted last week.
A family friend said: "Harry had been struggling with the cancer for some years but went downhill last week.
"Fortunately Shane was able to come to the hospital to be with his dad for his remaining days."
Shane, 45, had a troubled relationship with his father. He said when he was young he was "really frightened" of Harry and that he used to hit him when he had been drinking.
The pair also fell out over Shane's desire to be an actor.
But the star - who played Alfie Moon in the BBC soap until he left in 2005 - started patching things up nearly ten years ago.
The friend said: "Shane was holding his hand when he slipped away, which was pretty emotional.
"He's very upset but is drawing strength from his family."
It is the second recent tragedy to hit Albert Square stars. In August Samantha Janus - Ronnie Mitchell in the soap - was left devastated after dad Noel, 60, hanged himself.
