Sherlock Holmes' enduring popularity
| Quote: | This weekend sees the 150th anniversary of the birth of Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the world's most celebrated fictional detective.
So what's kept him at the top for 122 years?
In 1887, appearing in print for the first time, Sherlock Holmes set out his purpose in life.
The declaration in "A Study in Scarlet" would also come to dictate much of the subsequent career of Holmes' creator, Arthur Conan Doyle - not always to his pleasure.
"There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it."
He went on to define the archetype of the brilliant but troubled detective.
Even today the character of Holmes defines what we expect of great fictional detectives.
We want them to accept that "duty" to do good - but also to be personally flawed.
The 28 year-old author wasn't the first to spot the narrative potential of an incisive but troubled detective. |

Holmes was one of the first Gentlemen detectives previous ones came predominately from the lower working classes as they were based on police men of the day. Holmes came along shortly after a new detective force was created mainly working out of London and being sent all around the country to solve murders of the day.
I have read many of the detective books of the day and Conan Doyle is far and above one of the best writers of that time and indeed his work stands up well against many of todays writers too.

Apparently Dr Watson lost the front door keys and was really at a loss what to do...
Sherlock said to him "Go and buy a piece of citrus fruit at the market, and bring it back here immediately"
Watson did as he was told and returned within a few minutes and handed the fruit to Holmes, Holmes then cut the fruit into two pieces and squirted one piece through the keyhole...whereupon the door opened!
Watson was stunned..."How on earth did you manage that Holmes?" he asked
"Simple" said Holmes...
It was a Lemon entry my dear Watson!
