A British tourist has died and 29 others have been struck down with food poisoning at a luxury Italian hotel.

Geoffrey Appleyard, 71, was taken ill just hours after having a seafood dinner with his wife Jean.

He died in their hotel room. Distraught Mrs Appleyard, 74, said last night: "He was fine until after dinner on Saturday night. Then he said he felt ill and he just got worse."

Mr Appleyard, from Evesham, Worcs, was one of 15 British tourists who travelled to the Grand Hotel Gardone on Lake Garda in northern Italy - where Winston Churchill often stayed - with Thomson Holidays.

At least 29 other Brits were affected and last night 16 were still being treated in hospital. Salmonella is suspected.

A postmortem was due to be carried out to establish whether Mr Appleyard's death is linked

It amazes me how on holiday people throw caution to the wind and eat at places they would never touch at home, that may not have happened in this case but it was my first thought.
