Why do people do this?

| Quote: | A mother who left her two-year-old son home alone to spend a weekend partying was facing jail last night.
Kelly Tollerton abandoned the youngster - who cannot be named - to scavenge for food in bin-liners in a filthy kitchen at her flat.
As the 22-year-old was convicted of child cruelty and attempting to pervert the course of justice, Recorder William Harbage QC told her the outrage was "the culmination of a period of wilful neglect".
He said: "The parenting of this child was totally inadequate.
"You have been convicted on the clearest evidence of leaving him home alone while you went to stay with your partner. A prison sentence is almost inevitable."
The court heard police found the boy penned into a kitchen by a baby gate after neighbours called them.
He was dirty, half-dressed, sobbing, shaking with cold and surrounded by nappies, broken crockery and water from an overflowing sink.
Felicity Gerry, prosecuting, told a jury: "It was a deliberate act of abandonment so that, in her own words, she could 'go out and party'."
Tollerton, of Lincoln, had claimed she arranged for a babysitter, Emma Barton, 22, to take care of the boy while she went out with her then boyfriend, Ken Hill, 40.
But Ms Barton told Lincoln crown court she had not babysat for Tollerton for months.
Tollerton told the jury: "I wouldn't have abandoned him. I was never neglectful. I took care of him as best I could. I loved him very much."
After police discovered the boy, he was handed over to social services. He was put up for adoption and now, aged four, is preparing to start school - but experts say he has not developed as well as he should.
Tollerton, who was granted bail until later this month, refused to comment as she left the court, saying only: "I can't believe it. I don't want to say anything else."
Former friend Rachael Manning, 28 - who Tollerton tried to persuade to back up her story - gave evidence for the prosecution. After the case, she said: "The idea I would have gone out with her, knowing a little boy was home alone, is ridiculous.
"I feel sorry for him. He was so nice, but always dirty - like the flat."

This is absolutely appalling and she deserves to receive a jail sentence
If people aren't prepared to take on the responsibilities that having children brings then they shouldn't have them
Regardless of her circumstances I'm sure there would have been someone who could have looked after her son if she wanted some time on her own |

The poor little lad, its just a good job a neighbour noticed before he ended up drowning
A mother who left her two-year-old son home alone so she could spend a weekend partying has been jailed for at least six months.
Kelly Tollerton's son was caged in the kitchen by a baby gate and had to rummage in rubbish bags for food "like a dog".
He was discovered three days later when water from an overflowing sink filled with pots poured into a neighbour's flat below.
Police broke in and found the boy sobbing and standing in several inches of water wearing a filthy Babygro surrounded by dirty nappies and broken crockery. He was shivering with cold and had been using a pile of dirty washing as a bed.
Sentencing her at Lincoln Crown Court, Recorder William Harbage QC said: "It defies belief that any mother can treat her child in that way. In my opinion, you are not a fit mother."
The court had heard that Tollerton's actions were a "deliberate act of abandonment so that she could go out and party".
Tollerton, 22, said she and her 40-year-old boyfriend partied all weekend but their babysitter had let them down.
There was also criticism of the social services and health visitors and an investigation launched after it emerged the boy was placed on an at-risk register at the age of two months because he was seriously underweight.
But social services ended contact with him when he started to attend nursery.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was put up for adoption and now, aged four, has started school. |

| Seems the mum has low intelligence and the child was on the at risk register at one time, not sure some people should be allowed to have children TBH |
